Gmail adds SMS to chat

Just read on Webmonkey that Gmail Labs will be adding SMS to chat tonight (10/30/2008). I checked moments ago and it still wasn't available to me. Look under the Labs option in Settings. Once enabled, you should be able to send SMS text messages directly from Gmail to contacts' mobile phones - and back. Cool feature!

Update 11/1 - If you've been looking for the switch you can flip to turn on SMS in Google Chat, you'll be waiting a bit longer. Apparently, Google found some glitches and decided to delay general release for a few more weeks. Stay posted.

Update 12/10 - OK - It's up! I just used Google chat to send a message via SMS to two buddies. They received and responded. Pretty slick! If you're a Gmail user, log in and then click Settings | Labs. Scroll down and choose Enable in the Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat section. You'll then be able to specify an SMS phone number for your contacts when you chat. Have fun (but remember that regular SMS charges apply)!

Chrome Begins to Lose Market Share

As Product Manager for ScheduleTown, I'm keeping a close eye on Google's new Chrome browser (our app - which provides online scheduling for busy service providers - already runs under Internet Explorer 7, Safari, and Firefox). Most of us in the office downloaded Chrome on its release date and played around with it, but then quickly went back to using our browser of choice (for me, that's Firefox). In testing, I loved that our application SCREAMED in Chrome, but I'm not sure I'm ready to declare official support for the browser just yet.

Today, I found this story at ComputerWorld that indicates I'm not the only one who dropped Chrome after an initial looksy. It seems that Chrome has dropped to .77% of measured Internet traffic, down from a high of just over 1% following its release.
