Axtell Anceney Road Photo Drive (Southwest Montana)

Faced with a beautiful fall day in Bozeman, I had a decision to make: try to get in one more round of golf, or slip out for some fall photography. Given that I'm still limping around a bit on a bum leg, I decided it might be better to skip walking nine holes and go on a photo drive instead. It doesn't hurt that great photo shooting days have been hard to come by this fall, what with the sub-freezing weather we had in early October. We really didn't have any fall color thanks to the early freeze, but the crisp blue sky on display today was enough to entice me out with my camera.

I decided to drive the Axtell Anceney Road, which connects US 191 (the road to Big Sky) with SR 84 (the road to Norris). This road is impassable when wet, but we haven't had any moisture in the past week so I was good to go.

One of the things I love about Montana is how easy it is to find relative solitude so quickly. After driving Axtell Anceney only 4 miles, I had the road to myself for the next two hours - with the exception of two vehicles, two dirt bikes, and a guy driving a tractor.

I shot only 88 frames today - several bracketed exposures for HDR (which I decided were unnecessary after getting the photos into LightRoom) and several of the same composition using different lenses just to play. Here are my favorite shots from the day.

Did you find some great color or what? Were all these taken in roughly the same location? We need to plan another shoot. I'm ready for another lesson.

Brant - you know the door is always open. And as far as lessons - I've seen some of your stuff lately. Don't think I'll be teaching you much. These shots were all taken on a ten mile stretch of back-country road not twenty minutes from my house. Isn't Montana great?

Tom - Thanks for the compliment. It's great finally having a few weeks of fall here! The low sun this time of year makes 'golden hour' last a lot longer...

Guess I'm a regular visitor to your site now, Tim. Hopefully I can schlepp some photo tips off you since I am so unworthy of my Nikon D200, but hope to improve the images on my site over time.

I too miss the leaves this year. They all got freeze dried. My husband Shawn is student teaching out in Three Forks where it's warmer, but says the same happened there as well — no fall color.

Nice Axtell images. My favorite is the first one...

Welcome back, Megan! Not sure I can handle the pressure of regular visitors - means I'll have to update more often. The D200 is a great camera - I'm still debating my next move when I graduate from my Olympus e500. I have enough invested in my Olympus system that I feel I need to stay in that family, but when the entire rest of the photography world is shooting Canon or Nikon, I question my alliance.

I had my wife read your Montana Cup post - she laughed out loud. Another fan!
