Nothing Says 'West' Like a Barbed Wire Fence

Perhaps because I grew up in Wyoming, I've always been a fan of this composition. Barbed wire played a huge role in the homesteading of the west, and it still represents the majority of fencing used in this part of the country. Shot with my 40-150mm at 40mm; 1/400 sec. at f4.

Not a Bad Place to Call Home

Had beautiful weather in Cody, Wyoming yesterday - nearly 50F in the middle of January! I decided to take advantage of the great weather to take a photo drive up the South Fork. I'm continually amazed by the beauty of God's creation. Here's a shot of horses grazing in the gently rolling hills of the South Fork. Golden hour sun and majestic mountains in the background combined to create a great pastoral scene. Shot with my 40-150mm at 77mm; 1/15 sec at f11.

Get 20% off at Moo.com through 1/31/09

If you're a fan of Moo minis, business cards, and stickers you can get 20% off through the end of this month. Just use code PDVNQV when you check out (unfortunately, this is for new customers only). Go to www.moo.com to check out their product list and order up some cool photo bling! Note: Moo is located in London, so if you're ordering from the States expect a little longer delivery time. That said - in my experience, the air-mailed packages I've received from Moo have been delivered much faster than I anticipated. Good stuff.

Great Article on Portrait Photography

Just read a great post at Photo Camel on the Rules for Portrait Photography. Portraiture is something I've more or less stayed away from - the complexities of lighting, posing, and capture make this style of photography pretty imposing. Ben Jones has distilled the essentials down to a succinct list - with image examples - to help make some sense out of it all. Read the post here - then join Photo Camel to thank Ben for making this resource available. Note: After you finish reading the rules, browse through the remaining comments to download a PDF and see an explanation of the 1-3-2 and 1-2-2 poses (posted on 9/7/2007).

Great Carlin Quote in Kawasaki's 'Reality Check'

I'm currently reading Guy Kawasaki's Reality Check. I'm enjoying the book immensely, as expected. However, I had my first LOL moment today when I read this introductory quote to Guy's chapter on e-mail etiquette:

"The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to himself, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.'" - George Carlin

Brilliant.

Snowplay - New Years Day

Here are a few pics I took during our afternoon playing in the snow here at the cabin - we've got a bit of snow!

Comin' at ya! Cooke City Snowmobiling

Although I applied a rather atypical crop to this image, I really like the way it turned out. Looks like the sled could pop right out of the frame!

Pilot Peak Sentinel - Cooke City Snowmobiling

Here's another snowmobiling shot taken in the mountains above Cooke City, Montana. In this shot, you can see Pilot Peak standing proudly in the background (it's the lower peak in the center of the frame). As you can see, the wind put a pretty good crust on the snow - we had so much wind in the valley that we witnessed significant blowdown coming into the cabin on our sleds yesterday. Under that top crust was about two feet of powder - fun, fun, fun.

Blue Skies and Powder - Cooke City Snowmobiling

Took this shot of my father-in-law yesterday afternoon in the mountains above Cooke City, Montana. We actually saw the sun here for the first time all week! Today, it's snowing again...

Cooke City Snowmobiling - December 2008

We're finally at the family cabin near Silver Gate, Montana. This afternoon, we went out to the mountains above Cooke City for some snowmobiling. This area is a mecca for back-country snowmobiling - folks come from all over to enjoy the area's abundant snowfall (usually over 15' per season). We're still pretty early in the season - there's probably not more than 4' yet. Even so, we've had enough snow in the past week that the sledding is pretty decent. Most rocks are hidden and there's some good powder to be had.

I like to take a camera along for the ride to snap some powder pics. This can be a challenge given that my E500 is not weatherized. I carry my camera and a second lens in my Kata T212 Torso pack. Although I wear the pack under my coat to protect it from the snow, I still place the camera and lens in a sealed plastic bag to protect it from stray snow and condensation.

Here are a few pics I took today. It was snowing pretty heavily, so the light was not good. Still, I think we got some decent action shots.
