Yellowstone Bull Elk - January 2010
Saw this bull elk and another of his buddies lounging a few miles outside of Mammoth as we left the cabin after New Year's. Shot using my Olympus E500 and 70-300mm Zuiko lens; 1/200 sec. at f8.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, @brantnyberg and I trekked out to Boysen Lake near Riverton, WY to catch a few shots of the rising sun. Mother Nature had other ideas, however - with heavy fog and low clouds, we never did get a great sunrise but instead a gradual lightening to a gray morning. While it wasn't what we'd hoped for, we did spend some time taking a few shots of interesting rock formations and islands that looked great in the fog. We don't get much of this kind of fog in the inner-mountain region, so it was fun. All shots taken with my Olympus E500 and various Zuiko lenses. Post-processing done in LightRoom.
As the sun set on Christmas Day 2009, I stopped for one last shot on the banks of the Soda Butte. I was rewarded for my patience with this beautiful alpenglow as the sun set to my right. Shot with my Olympus E500; 1/3 sec. at f11.
This is one of my favorite trees to shoot in the Lamar Valley. I've taken this shot at the height of golden fall color, and on Christmas Day I decided to capture an image of this lone tree in the dead of winter. Not entirely happy with the color version or a standard black and white treatment, I decided to try this effect. Seems appropriate for winter. Shot with my Olympus E500 at f11 for 1/20 sec.
Speaking of the coyotes I saw in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley on Christmas Day 2009 - here's a shot of two who were hunting on the other side of the Lamar River. Shot with my Olympus E500 and Zuiko 70-300mm lens at f8 for 1/100 sec.
I took this shot Christmas Day on the frozen river bed at the confluence of the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek in Yellowstone Park's Lamar Valley. I was surprised by the lack of wildlife out and about - I saw several coyotes and one bison, but that was it! I decided I'd have to shoot some landscapes if I wasn't going to go home empty-handed. Shot with my tripod-mounted Olympus E500, 1/60 sec at f11.
One of my favorite shots of the day. No cropping necessary - just got up-close and personal on this one! Taken with my Olympus E500; 1/500 sec. at f4.9.
Sometimes, everything doesn't work out quite like it's planned. Fortunately, you're landing in snow - what could go wrong? Taken with my Olympus E500; 1/640 sec. at f5.0.
After tracking up the fresh powder in a meadow behind Round Lake, the fellas found a couple of hills that looked like excellent launching pads. Taken with my Olympus E500; 1/640 sec. at f4.0.
The powder flying through the air makes this shot a little less crisp than the others, but it gives a good sense of how dry and fluffy the snow was for our play day in the mountains above Cooke City on Christmas Eve 2009. Taken with my Olympus E500; 1/800 sec. at f5.0.
